What is a Realism Tattoo?

A realism tattoo aims to replicate real-life images with meticulous detail. This style demands a deep understanding of shading, perspective, and anatomy to achieve a lifelike appearance. Realism tattoos can be done in black and grey or full colour, depending on the final outcome you want!

Portrait tattoos are a subset of realism that focuses on depicting human faces with exact likeness. This requires an exceptional level of skill to capture expressions, emotions, and subtle nuances.  What to look for in a Realism Tattoo Artist

Green Flags

A Consistent, High-Quality Portfolio

  • Their Instagram or website should have plenty of realism tattoos for you to browse.

  • Look for detail, clean shading, accurate proportions, and healed work (not just fresh tattoos).

Healed Tattoo Photos

  • Realism tattoos can look amazing when fresh but may fade poorly if not applied well.

  • Artists who show healed work are confident in their technique and ink saturation.

Specialisation in Realism

  • Choose someone who focuses specifically on realism or portraits.

  • If you're after a portrait, it’s best to go with a portrait specialist like Chris Sinclair, who works exclusively in realism.

Willingness to Consult

  • A good artist will offer a free consultation to talk through your idea, explain the process, and recommend what works best for your skin tone and placement.

Clean and Professional Studio

  • The shop should be council approved, clean, and professional.

  • You should feel comfortable, not rushed or pressured.

Transparent Pricing

  • Pricing should be clear and discussed before the appointment.

  • Fixed quotes based on your idea (like we offer at Eleven Pillars) are better than vague hourly rates. That way you are not charged more if your tattoo takes longer to complete that initially expected.

❌ Red Flags

Too Much Reliance on AI or Filtered Renders

  • AI images are great for inspo, but a tattoo artist will have learned to draw from scratch and so using AI is a great took to help elevate art but not to create it entirely.

Inconsistent Work

  • If some of their realism tattoos look great and others seem rushed, shaky, or low-detail, proceed with caution.

No Healed Work Shown

  • Fresh tattoos always look darker and crisper. Healed photos reveal whether the ink was packed well or if it faded badly. Artists will usually have this highlighted somewhere on their profile.

Overpromising or Underquoting

  • Be wary of artists promising photorealism in short sessions or for super cheap.

  • Realism takes time and skill, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Poor Communication

  • If the artist doesn’t listen to your ideas, explain the process, or is hard to reach, that’s a big red flag.

  • Good communication is key to a successful realism piece.
